Container or cleanout: how to choose?
Updated: October 2026
Both options let you get rid of a lot, but they suit different situations. Here are some general pointers.
A container: you fill it at your own pace
A container is delivered, you fill it yourself over an agreed period, then it is picked up. It often suits projects that produce debris over several days, such as a renovation or roofing.
- You need accessible space for the truck and container.
- A municipal permit may be required if the container is on the street.
- Some materials may be refused or priced differently.
A cleanout: someone does the work
A cleanout business carries the items out and takes them away. This often suits situations where a space must be cleared quickly, items are heavy, or you cannot handle them yourself.
Questions to ask yourself
- Do the items need to be carried out by someone else?
- Does the work span several days?
- Do you have the space and, if needed, the permit for a container?
- Is it mostly furniture and items, or construction debris?
