Preparing a junk pickup: 7 useful checks
Updated: October 2026
A clear request helps the business understand the job and offer a fairer price. Here are simple checks to do before you start.
1. Make a rough list
Note the large items (couch, appliances, mattresses) and estimate the rest: a few boxes, a full room, half a truck. An estimate is enough; you can answer “I don’t know”.
2. Set aside what you keep
First remove what you want to keep, donate or sell. A sorted set of items is easier to describe and remove.
3. Spot what needs a review
These materials are not part of an ordinary pickup. Mention them in your request, even if you are unsure.
- Paint, solvents, oils, concentrated cleaning products
- Propane tanks, fuel tanks, batteries
- Materials that might contain asbestos
4. Describe access
Floor, narrow stairs, elevator, distance to the truck, parking: these details affect the job. Add them to the access notes.
5. Add photos if you wish
Photos are optional. On Déchets.ca they stay private and are only visible to the business that purchases your request, after your authorization. Avoid showing personal documents.
6. Check municipal options
Your municipality may offer bulky-item collections or an eco-centre. Rules, dates and fees vary: always check your municipality’s official information.
7. Compare at your own pace
Your request is sent to one participating business. You remain free to compare other options and to decline a quote.
